Virtual Circuit Blocking Probabilities in an ATM Banyan Network with b×b Switching Elements∗

چکیده
This paper presents the trade-offs that exist between the blocking probability, the size of the switching elements, the offered load and the link capacities in an ATM-based Banyan multistage interconnection network for QoS-sensitive applications. We present a quasi-analytical study which indicates that, as the link capacity between switching elements is increased, the blocking probability reduces exponentially. We show that, in contrast to what is generally believed, larger switching elements are often, but not always the best design choice. Relevant design recommendations that arise from these results are discussed. The conclusions of this paper are also applicable in non-ATM contexts such as in circuit-switched networks with link-dilated topologies, or photonic switching networks using WDM. Keywords—ATM, blocking performance, Banyan networks, non-blocking networks, multistage interconnection networks.

Performance Evaluation of a Modified Cyclic Banyan based ATM Switch for B-ISDN
This paper focuses on designing a Fast Packet ATM switch suitable for B-ISDN. It is a Banyan network using cyclic interconnection among switching elements of the same stage for deflection routing. The proposed routing is as simple as that of the generic Banyan network, and all the switching elements (SE’s) have a uniform structure. To design the proposed network and to develop its self-routing ...
متن کاملDesign of Non-Blocking and Rearrangeable Modified Banyan Network with Electro-Optic MZI Switching Elements
Banyan networks are really attractive for serving as the optical switching architectures due to their unique properties of small depth and absolute signal loss uniformity. The fact has been established that the limitations of blocking nature and the nonavailability of proper connections due to non-rearrangeable property can be easily ruled out using electro-optic MZI switches as basic switching...
متن کاملAn Improvement of Banyan Networks and 2-Dilated Banyan Networks Based on Bypasses Positioning
Banyan networks and their improved switches such as 2-dilated banyan networks are usually constructed by a self-routing mechanism, and provide a high multiplexing transmission capacity to ATM networks. Due to cell blocking in the switching elements in these banyan networks, however, cell loss is occurred and then the throughput of each network is decreased. To improve this problem, we have intr...
متن کاملDesign and Simulation of an 8x8 Batcher-Banyan switch using ALTERA EPLD
The Batcher-Banyan (BB) network is an important class of non-blocking multistage interconnection networks widely used in shared memory multiprocessor interconnection and as well as in ATM switches. In this project, we implemented switching elements for these Batcher-Banyan networks. These switches were designed to be fully scalable so that the same switching element could be used for building l...
متن کاملReducing cell loss in banyan based ATM switching fabrics
In this paper, we propose a new technique for reducing cell loss in multi-banyan based ATM switching fabrics. We propose a switch architecture that uses incremental path reservation based on previously established connections. Path reservation is carried out sequentially within each banyan but multiple banyan planes can be concurrently reserved. We use a conflict resolution approach according t...
